Since then I’ve found that I can be picky about the sexual aspect of f/f relationships in media. There was a feeling of belonging I didn’t know I was missing so much that was so strong I could feel it in my chest. I hadn’t been out very long at that point and I didn’t realize how important this would be to me. Since I spent so long avoiding the subject, The Second Mango was the first book I read with a female main character describing the same feelings towards girls that I felt. My church said that homosexuality was a sin so I was certainly not going to seek out books that included it. If the thought of me not being straight even occurred to me, it would be in the course of asking myself why I’m thinking about that since it’s so ridiculous and then it would be quickly chased away. I spent the next 8 years or so denying my sexuality. I got pulled into a rather fundamentalist part of Christianity around middle school.
Queen Shulamit, the main character, is a lesbian who feels isolated because of that as well as because of health problems that few people take seriously. It understood me in a way I wasn’t used to books doing.
The Second Mango by Shira Glassman made me happier than any book I can remember.
So today I want to start with one that isn’t as well-known as the others I have in mind.
